Apex Legends seems to be having a big new mode, similar to Fortnite’s adoption of a battle royale mode, which changed the game forever. It’s most likely related to the Arena teaser that’s currently available in Apex Legends, and we’ll likely hear more about it in the Apex Legends Legacy launch trailer, which drops today, April 22.
“Few game devs recognized this lesson from Fortnite: You can delight players and drive massive growth for a game by adding a new/different genre as a ‘mode’ and supporting it as a full game,” Respawn director of communication Ryan K. Rigney tweeted. “League of Legends did it with [Teamfight Tactics].”
Rigney then announces that the Apex Legends Legacy launch trailer will be released tomorrow, but he clarifies that it is “unrelated” to his remark about games being able to evolve for the better by incorporating new genres as game modes. It certainly isn’t, Rigney. It certainly isn’t.
Apex Legends has been teased with something big for a long time. “Later this year, [Respawn] will launch new ways to play [Apex Legends] that take us beyond battle royale,” game director Chad Grenier wrote at the start of Season 8: Mayhem.
Furthermore, there are some in-game signs that “The Arena” will be coming to Apex Legends in the coming season. If you loot care packages during a match, you’ll find an invitation on the lobby menu that unlocks a phone and sends you on a quest for holographic symbols around Kings Canyon and Olympus. Finding both of them in the Firing Range unlocks an elevator that leads to a hidden area where Ash—who hasn’t been seen in the game since the end of Season 5’s Quest—asks, “Do you believe you have what it takes to make an impression on me? We’ll find out as soon as possible. The Arena is waiting for you.”
Given Ash’s Titanfall link, fans have speculated that the new mode would be similar to Titanfall 2’s team deathmatch modes, such as Attrition or Live Fire. Respawn has also experimented with other forms of game modes in Apex Legends through limited-time events, including Zombie/Infected with Shadowfall and Shadow Royale, Horde with Quest, and King Of The Hill with Winter Express.
