How To Use Your iPhone And Apple TV To Calibrate Your TV’s Picture

A new tool that uses your iPhone‘s TrueDepth camera to fix the color on your TV without having to go through complicated menu options was one of the surprises at Apple’s Spring Loaded case. It’s also not enough to have a new Apple TV to use it. This is how it goes.

You’ll need to hold your iPhone very close to the TV for the calibration process to start.
  • To get started, you’ll need an iPhone with Face ID running iOS 14.5 or later and an Apple TV or Apple TV 4K with tvOS 14.5 or later.
  • Turn on your Apple TV and open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and open the Video and Audio tab.
  • Select Calibration.
  • Choose Color Balance.

Get your iPhone now. A pairing notification will appear if it’s close to your Apple TV, informing you that Color Balance is open. When you press the Continue button, a phone outline will appear on your TV. Hold your phone really close to your TV (about an inch or less from the wall), with the front camera facing the screen and within the colored phone outline. It’s a little finicky, and it took me a few tries to get it right.

The phone silhouette on the TV will flash through a sequence of colors until it recognizes the camera. If it works, your TV will display a beach scene with a before and after side to show the calibration result if you keep your phone still and close to the wall. Toggle between the old (Original) and new (Balanced) colors to see which one you prefer, then press to adjust it.

When the calibration is complete, you’ll be able to check the difference between the original and new color balanced version.

This affects the quality of your Apple TV system rather than the settings on your television. As a result, while the calibration will work well with anything you do on your Apple TV, it will not calibrate your TV if you use it with an Xbox/PlayStation or a cable box.
