Some people said that 2020 wasn’t Apple’s year, but Apple’s latest AirPods Max noise-canceling headphones are Apple’s smashing retort to them. After all the guessing and speculating in yesterday’s post, we are finally glad to announce that Apple has in fact made a hardware launch as a part of their ‘Christmas Surprise’ for the users, and it is none other than the most speculated, Airpods Max over-ear headphones (previously being called Airpods Studio). The product has been launched worldwide, including India, and will soon be available for shipping from the 15th of December.

Price and Availability in India

Apple’s AirPods Max have already been listed on the Apple India online store for no more than Rs.59,900/-. Comparing it with the globally announced price of $549 it roughly amounts to about Rs. 40,500/-, but that is without accounting for customs and logistics, so a direct conversion stands useless.

Talking about the availability, the AirPods Max will start being shipped from 15 December worldwide. They will be available for sale through both Apple India online store and other certified resellers. Apple has also started taking pre-orders.

Design

In regard to design, Apple has said that

The breathable knit mesh canopy, spanning the headband, is made to distribute weight and reduce on-head pressure. The stainless steel headband frame provides strength, flexibility, and comfort for a wide variety of head shapes and sizes. Telescoping headband arms smoothly extend and stay in place to maintain the desired fit.
Each ear cup attaches to the headband through a revolutionary mechanism that balances and distributes ear cup pressure and allows it to independently pivot and rotate to fit the unique contours of a user’s head.

Specifications and Features

Among many of its ravishing features, one that catches our attention is “custom acoustic design” featuring a 40mm driver system through which the premium headphones claim to provide rich, deep bass, accurate mid-range, and crisp, clean high-frequency extension so that every note can be heard. Moreover, a number of commendable features from the previous Airpods series like adaptive EQ,  spatial audio, transparency mode, and audio sharing have also been carried forward. A feature from Apple Watch has also been integrated into the over-ear headphones, which is said to provide precise volume control and the ability to play or pause audio, answer or end phone calls, skip tracks, and even activate Siri. A distinct “noise control” button has also been added for seamless switching between the noise-canceling and transparency modes.

However, none of these features stand above those provided by other existing premium headphone providers, who are already providing the noise-cancellation feature in the market. But one of the few features that make the AirPods Max stand out, are its memory foam ear cushions which are easily removable and also attachable via magnets, and also make for good comfort. Hence, an easy replacement will also be a perk.

Other than that, the AirPods Max also boast of a long-lasting battery life that can last up to 20 hours when fully charged. A five-minute charge will last up to almost 90 minutes. The headphones automatically pause on removing them and also resume when put back on.

Apple is also providing a “smart case” for the AirPods Max. On putting the headphones in it, they are automatically put into a low-power mode. Unfortunately, a more protective hardshell case isn’t being sold by Apple yet.

Coming to the details about Apple’s noise-cancellation system, it produces anti-noise to tone down external sound with the use of six outward-facing microphones. Additional distractions are canceled out by two inward-facing mics that measure what you’re hearing. Apple has also claimed that the built-in beamforming mics in the AirPods Max provide well for voice calls, in windy conditions as well.

It is not much of a surprise that with the launch of the AirPods Max, Apple has certainly made a strong entry in the premium headphones range, but it would not be without some severe competition from other brands like Bose, Sony, Sennheiser, AKG, Bowers and Wilkins who have already made a name and space in this category. But this isn’t the first time that Apple has battled its competition, and certainly won’t be the last!
