US Treasury Infiltrated by Russian Hackers

Hackers may have become a common thing these days, but what’s very uncommon is the US Treasury being breached by hackers. In an exclusive report by Reuters, it has been mentioned that the US Treasury was infiltrated by hackers on Saturday.

The group of hackers is said to be named APT29, or Cozy Bear, and is believed to be backed by Russia as per recent updates. They had shown utmost sophistication and proficiency in the process considering this wasn’t their first time breaching the US Department.

Yes, you heard right. According to the latest reports, the hackers are said to be the same ones that infiltrated the US State Department and the White House during Barrack Obama’s term and were held responsible for the security breach at FireEye. Their current project seems to be spying into the coronavirus vaccine research over the period of summer.

Reuters’ three reliable sources have told them that the hackers were monitoring internal emails at the U.S. Treasury Department and the NTIA, which is responsible for internet policies.

With regard to the situation, John Ullyot, the National Security Council spokesman said, “The United States government is aware of these reports and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation.”

It is also feared by the US Intelligence Community that the hackers may have used similar mechanisms to hack into other government agencies as well. However, the agencies weren’t named.

As a matter of fact, this matter was considered so grave that a National Security Council meeting was called at the White House on Saturday itself.

At the NTIA headquarters, their Microsoft Office 365 was hacked and their mails were being monitored by the hackers for months. The hackers were extremely successful at deceiving the software and its authentication controls.

This has come just weeks after former President Donald Trump fired Chris Krebs. As a result of which the US Cyber security Cell has remains without a chief.

The investigation is still premature and much can’t be said, but a range of federal agencies are involved, including the FBI. Hence, results are expected soon.

Regardless of the sensitivity of the stolen data and mails, this hack brings serious defamation to the current US Government. Stay tuned to know the latest details about the topic and do let us know your views in the comment section below!
